Avalon “Abbie” James 1924-2015
James, Avalon Edith “Abbie” – 91, Lapland, passed away July 20, 2015 in Fisherman’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg. Born in Lapland, she was a daughter of the Late Guy and Estella (Johnson) Thompson. Surviving are her sister Pauline “Polly” Zwicker, Lapland; nieces and nephews Gale, Lynne, Elaine, Kelly, Mark, Debbie, Karen, Robbie; several great-nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by brother Robert “Buddy”, nephew Ted. Funeral Service will be 2:00pm Friday in Lapland United Baptist Church, where visitation will be held from 1:00pm until prior to service at 2pm. Pastor Cathy Uhlman and Rev. David Collins-Carter Officiating. Interment in Green Haven Cemetery, Lapland. Family flowers only. Memorial Donations may be made to Lapland United Baptist Church or the Charity of your choice. FOSTER – Edward A. “Eddie”, 66, of Liverpool, passed away peacefully in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool on July 8, 2015 surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Liverpool, he was a son of the late Arthur and Madeline (Whynot) Foster.
Eddie worked as a fish processor in Lockeport at the local fish plant for a number of years. He also did Traffic Control and worked for Huskilson’s Funeral Home in Shelburne preparing grave sites. His second biggest love besides his family, especially his grandchildren, was music and he enjoyed playing guitar with Dave Burbine and others at local variety concerts and gatherings. He will be fondly remembered for his musical talent.
He is survived by his wife Sandra (Conrad), his daughters Jacqueline and Jennifer, his sons John (Naomi) of Chester, Jason (Charlena) of Liverpool and Joseph (Courtney) of White Point as well as a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren and his brothers Allen (Irene) of Lockeport and Donnie (Susan) of Sable River.
He was predeceased by his brother George.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. Visitation will be Sunday, July 12, 2015 from 7 until 9 p.m. in Chandlers’ Funeral Chapel, Liverpool. Annie Etta Harris (November 2, 1913 – May 3, 2014)
HARRIS, Annie Etta – 100, Welshtown, passed away in Roseway Hospital on May 3, 2014. Born in Jordan Ferry she was a daughter of the late Archibald and Alma (Firth) MacLean. Annie was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother. She was devoted to her Community and was very involved with the Shelburne County Exhibition for over 50 years, a Founding Member of the Upper Clyde Social Club, a long-time member of the Shelburne and Area Women’s Liberal Association as well as numerous other organizations. In her early years she was a teacher and postmaster in the Upper Clyde School House. She was a volunteer for the Red Cross. Annie is survived by her son, Lloyd; 7 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Clinton; daughter, Ethel; great grandson, Adam, son-in-law Jerry. and 9 brothers and sisters. Visitation will be Tuesday from 7-9 pm in H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home Shelburne where the funeral service will take place on Wednesday at 2pm with Rev. Ed Trevors officiating. Burial in Lower Ohio Cemetery. Family flowers only. Geraldine Ruth Siegel – 81, of Roseway Manor, formerly of Middle Ohio, passed away on February 2, 2012. Born in Middle Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Earle and Frances (Harris) MacKay. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Geraldine was a very community-minded individual and was a Provincial Volunteer of the Year for Shelburne County. She was a member of both Lower and Middle Ohio Union Churches as well as a treasurer of the church and a member of the Lower Ohio Ladies Aid. She was also past secretary of the Shelburne County Exhibition and a past 4-H Leader. Geraldine enjoyed antiques and the flea markets. She was an avid weather folklore enthusiast. She was an exceptional cake decorator. She is survived by her husband, Douglas, sons, Peter (Carol), Ted (Cindy); daughters, Mindy (Burt), Patty (Steven), grandchildren, Mark, Colin, April, Peggy, Chrissie, Megan, Jesse and Brendan; great-grandchildren, Lincoln, Quinn, Ryan, Jacob, and Lexie. Her body has been donated to science.
VARNER, Loran Keith – Shelburne. A devoted and loving father passed away peacefully at the age of 85 on June 5th, 2012 at Roseway Hospital, Shelburne. Born in Jordan Falls, he was the fourth son of the late Powley and Leah Matthews. When dad was 15, he joined the Merchant Navy serving on the Lady Nelson from 1943-1945. In June 1949, dad joined the DND Fire Department Halifax Dockyard and in 1967 accepted a promotion to CFS Shelburne, retiring as Fire Chief in 1983. Dad is best remembered for his musical talents and the giving of this special gift to his community. Dad was a member of several bands over the years, including Harbour Lites, Cellar Blue, Goodtymes Band and Evergreen, ending his musical career 2 years ago after playing with them for over 31 years. Once a month for 29 years, Evergreen played for the Senior Dances at Barrington Lions Hall. His music took him to other provinces and from one end of Nova Scotia to the other. Dad attended many music festivals and looked forward to them all, especially the Hank Snow Tribute every August. He made several CD’s with Evergreen and in 2006 made a CD saluting the Veterans and War Brides. In December of 2011 after a two-year hiatus, he took up playing one more time to entertain his family at Roseway Manor. Dad was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 63, Shelburne, served for over 25 years with Shelburne Lions Club where he held several positions; N.S. Guides Association, Charter Member of the Spry Harbor Atoms Softball Association, where he played the position of pitcher; Hank Snow Society and past member of the Shelburne Volunteer Fire Department. In his younger years dad played a lot of sports. He was on hockey teams in the Halifax area, he bowled, played pool, darts, curled, golfed and played ball for several Shelburne area teams. Dad loved relaxing at his camp at Clements Pond where he spent many, many days and nights feeding his feathered friends and squirrels with his camping buddies, Don, Lori, Lynne and Leigh. Dad is survived by son, Loran (Connie), Halifax; daughters, Diane (Hector) Isenor, Westphal; Deby (Danny) MacAlpine, Shelburne; Susan (Fred) Davis, Jordan Ferry; Earlene (Derek) Rennehan, Shelburne; Kelly (Adrian) Pierce, Bridgewater; friend, Ernie Davis; grandsons, Daniel, Loran, Freddie, Ryan, Ben Douglas, Isaiah, Steven, David; granddaughters, Jodi, Jamie, Samantha, Emma, Karen, Colleen, Krystal, Darlene; great-grandsons, Caleb, Blake, Cole, Camden, Nathan, Randy, Michael; great-granddaughters, Sydney, Madison, Khloe, Stevie, Thalissa; one very special daughter-in-law, Connie; sisters, Faye (Ken) Hartlen, Kingston, NS, and Hazel (Bernard) Cooke, Dartmouth; brothers, Clinton (Beverly) Varner, Kingston and Richard Varner, Dartmouth; many nephews, nieces and their families as well as his musical family, Don Randall and Lynne Crowell. Dad was predeceased by his wife, Florence Josey, brothers, Buddy, Earle, Raymond, Carl, Russell and sisters, Shirley Cameron and Ruth Russe.
BOWER, Sandra Anne – 53, of Shelburne, passed away in Roseway Hospital on April 26, 2012. Born in Sandy Point, she was a daughter of Lorna (Buchanan) and the late Milton Bower. Sandra was a devoted mother, grandmother and friend. She was a major volunteer in her community. She was a family and an animal person and those who knew her will know that her family and pets meant the world to her. She trained dogs in her spare time and worked with horses. Over the years she won many awards with her dogs and her pony. Sandra loved to volunteer with PET Projects, 4-H and the Shelburne Exhibition. She could always put a smile on your face. She was quite a character and could make something out of nothing and always came up with good ideas. She loved going in parades, dog shows and competing at the Shelburne Ex. She and her pony could be seen all over Town and there wasn’t a street or path they didn’t explore. Sandra made an impact on our little Town and she will always be standing at that 3rd.barrel with her flashing hat and a rake in her hand. She will always be loved and never forgotten. Besides her mother, she is survived by son, Lee Combs(Cheryl), Liverpool; daughter, Angela Coombs, Ajax, Ont; brother, Sonny; sisters, Rose Marie McCann and Ada (Mike) Lagendyk, both of Shelburne; grandchildren, Kalen and Alyssa as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Milton; brother, Donald and sister, Joan.

BLADES, Hobart Clifton “Hobie” – Jordan Branch, Shelburne County, passed away peacefully at home, with family at his side on July 30, 2010, after a long battle with cancer. Born on August 17, 1927, he was the son of Master Mariner Captain Clifton and Jennie May (Turner) Blades. He is survived by his wife, the former Louisa Oliver; sons by first marriage, Allison (Madeline) of Jordan Falls; Kevin (Joanne) of Tantallon; Paul (Sandra) of Lewis Lake, Halifax County; stepdaughter Alice (Robbie) Hopkins of Jordan Bay; grandchildren Andrew, Timothy, Bennett, Patrick, Darren, Christie, Danielle, Grayson, Braedon; sister-in-law Emma Blades; nieces Sandra Pickrem and Janice Ciz; nephew Harry Blades. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sister Evelyn, brother William. As a graduate of Mack’s Business College, he was employed with the Department of the Provincial Treasurer. He was then appointed Town Clerk for Shelburne in 1950. Prior to his retirement at age 55, he served as Justice of the Peace for 17 years. He received a letter of acknowledgement for his dedicated and long service to the Justice system. He was a founding member of the Shelburne County School Board, which evolved into the present-day Tri-County School Board. He was elected as Municipal Councillor and later became Warden of the Municipality of Shelburne for a number of years. He was a former President of the Shelburne County Exhibition and Shelburne Kinsman Club. As President of the East Shelburne County Fish and Game Association, he fought long and hard for more water flowage for the Jordan River system. As an avid hunter and fisherman, he especially enjoyed his many hunting and fishing trips with his 3 sons, grandsons, nephew and brother. He also enjoyed is salmon- fishing trips to Newfoundland. Being in the outdoors was his passion.
HOOD, Robert Q. “Bob” – 96, of Shelburne passed away peacefully in Roseway Hospital on May 5, 2010. Born in Shelburne on February 11, 1914, he was the son of William K. and Helen Jane (Quinlan) Hood. Bob led an active and varied life; he was an avid hunter, fisherman, and loved the outdoors. He took a great interest in his community; was a charter member of the Shelburne Lion’s Club; manager of the Shelburne County Exhibition; had a great interest in the political situation of the country; and was a long-standing member of the Jordan Falls Baptist Church. Bob was a businessman at heart, owning and operating Robert Hood and Son Ltd. (wholesale meats); FW Sutherland and Sons of Lockeport, and Shelburne Woodworkers Ltd. Of Shelburne. One of the things that he most enjoyed talking about was his tenure aboard the “CN Lady Boats” during war times. Although a dangerous time, there were many good memories. Robert is survived by his son Sanford (Jane), Shelburne; his granddaughter Anna (Stephen) of Wetaskiwin, Alberta, and his great-grandchildren Zachary, Jacob, Mitchell and Julianna. Robert was predeceased by his wife, Claire (Sanford); his siblings Arthur, Olive, Jennifer (Clinton), Mary (Ritchie), William, John, George and Richard.
2009
WAMBACK, Perry Ivan – 65, of Jordan Branch, Shelburne County, passed away at home on October 26, 2009. Born in West Green Harbour, he was a son of the late Clarence and Elsie (Scott) Wamback. Perry attended Lockeport Rural High School and then went on complete an electrical course at NSIT in Halifax, NS. He worked hard all of his life as an electrician throughout Shelburne County, and around Nova Scotia. In 1982, he was chosen as the Town Crier for Shelburne and went on to represent the town at numerous events locally and abroad, travelling to many locations across North America and fulfilling his dream of visiting England! Because of his booming, naturally loud voice, he won several town crying competitions including the Nova Scotia Championship, the Atlantic Championship, the North American Championship and International Championships in both Halifax, NS and England (Lyme Regis and Kingsbridge). He was a Past Noble Grand of the Jordan Lodge IOOF, and a past member of the Jordan Falls Volunteer Fire Department, Shelburne Curling Club and Shelburne Harbour Yacht Club. He is survived by his wife Nancy (Goulden); daughter Pam, Halifax; son, Rob (Jennie), Gunning Cove; brothers Terrence ”Boyd” (Kelsie), Sooke, B.C; Sid (Rosemary), Bible Hill; Tom, Allendale; Paul, Truro; sisters, Audrey (Sheldon) Stuart, Lockeport; Judy (Gary) Rose, Sandy Point; Lil (Dave) Heffernan, Brookfield; Cathy (Peter) Jones, Welshtown; Alberta(Leslie) Morash, West Head; Karen(Karl) Harris, Middle Ohio; brother in-law, Roger (Carole), Goulden, Shelburne; many nieces and nephews, even a few great -nieces and great-nephews. He also leaves behind his pride and joy- “Bald Dude’s Angels”- his grandchildren, Justin, Tayla and Ashton. He was predeceased by a brother Robert, in infancy.
Teamster Sandy Harris (4 April 1948 – 30 July 2009)
HARRIS, Alexander Karl “Sandy”- 61, of Shelburne Co, NS, passed away suddenly on Thursday, July 30, 2009 in his home with his wife Donna by his side. Born April 4th, 1948, Sandy was the son of the late Milton and Edith (Rhyno) Harris, and lived his entire life in his birthplace of Welshtown, where he was affectionately known as “The Mayor”. His career at the NS Department of Transportation spanned 34 years. Since retirement, he has been active selling firewood, and working for Swansburg Construction and Shelburne County Waste Management. He was an active member of the NS Ox Teamsters Association, and past Asst. Manager of the Shelburne County Exhibition. The great joys in his life were his children, grandchildren, oxen and faithful dog, Kye. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 43 years, Donna (Higgens), son David (Jessica), daughters Lori (Brady) and Gina Spidle, son Stephen Holroyd, special daughter Alexandra Taylor and grandchildren Brady Jr., Trevor, Alexandria, MacKenzie, Felicia, Katya, Thatcher and Anna. He is survived by brothers Gordon and Karl (Karen), sisters, Joyce and Carol (Pete), sister in-law Shirley Hutchinson (Garnet), and many wonderful cousins, nieces and nephews.
